  • Set realistic goals for increasing activity
  • Change their environment to reduce fall risk factors
  • Promote exercise to increase strength and balance
A Fall Risk Reduction Program

Healthy Steps for Older Adults

Healthy Steps for Older Adults is an evidence-based program that reduces fall risks amongst older adults. This program is a two day program, held for two hours each day. The program is designed to be fun, social and validating. It raises awareness about the causes of falls and how to prevent them. Participants will learn how to exercise safely at home and be offered information on ways to improve their health and well-being. Home and medication safety as well as appropriate foot care/foot wear will be discussed. A unique part of this program is the involvement of participants in physical skill screenings to determine an individual’s fall risk. Participants will also be referred to appropriate healthcare professionals and community resources as deemed appropriate to meet one’s needs when it comes to preventing falls.

An Evidence-Based Program Developed by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging

Healthy Steps In Motion

The program focuses on fall reduction by promoting exercise and physical activity for older adults. Participants learn about exercise basics, exercise safety, setting goals, aerobic walking and more! All participants will be assessed for their fall risk and complete exercises in class to build strength, stability and balance. Although any interested older adult may participate, this program is a good follow-up to our program, A Matter of Balance. Each participant goes away with a free textbook and resource information. The program is for those 60+, and there is no fee. The program is held for 1 hour, 8 sessions.
